The Process • SPORT HORSES • Purchasing Paperwork

Here are a few questions for you to think about if you are buying your first horse.

Maybe it's been awhile; We are here to assist!

True or False? A pre-purchase exam guarantees your horse will be sound and have long-term good health.

False. The pre-purchase exam (PPE) is a "snapshot in time", it is not a pass or fail test.

PPE's are inexpensive: False.

They range anywhere for $1500 to Thousands. Some inspections are "Ala Carte".

 -- Make choices that are right for you, your goals, and bank account.

 -- No horse is perfect! Some have a little moment of lameness or allergies or a stone bruise, for example. As a buyer, are you willing to manage a  problem if found? What are you willing to deal with and what are you not?

-- The more you can educate yourself on the basics before the exam the more clearly you can make these decisions if they arise.

Does it matter which equine veterinarian you use? No, It is purely a medical exam with supporting data.

It should, (simply put), be a clinical diagnosis of a horses present health. Soft tissue ultrasounds, skeletal, cardio, lungs, blood tests, etc. can be done. Plan ahead and think over what you would like to test for and what you feel isn't necessary based on what you wish to do with your new partner!

Are you getting excited yet!  We are if you read this far!

Did you know: "It is unethical for a Veterinarian to determine the use of a horse for any given sport?"

according to the AAEP.

https://aaep.org/resource/aaep-principles-of-veterinary-medical-ethics-equine-addendum/

The Buyer pays for a service to acquire a written report, therefore they are entitled to the report, as a one time event. They may not send it or use it for any purposes other than to purchase the horse being examined at that time.

What is sadly not made clear, is that all "medical records"  for an equine are the property of the "present owner of said equine." Just like Humans. "PPE's " are medical records. We supply all reports on our horses from our Veterinarians.

Educating Yourself Can Be Fun!

Understanding how to read a Radiograph, Ultrasound, listen to the heart, listen to the lungs, hoof palpitations is a benefit. Having a  clear understanding of a Proper execution of the Flexion is also important. It all gets taken into account and can be overwhelming, especially for someone who is buying their first horse.

Being prepared is always  best.

We understand that some of you have never purchased a horse before:

To get started on your next steps towards purchasing your equine partner,

we have made things a lot simpler!

"Purchasing a horse is a very personal journey! And there is nothing worse than being accompanied by a very opinionated professional. Ugh! Our new "policy of shared information" is to help "you" have a happy experience. We have heard of inexperienced people being brought to tears with bad PPE Veterinarians/or self interest Pros.

So we insist on a shared experience here at our farm. Because this should be fun and without tension, doubt or stress. We want this day to be exciting for you! We take careful care of our horses and want you to be confident and comfortable when coming to visit our farm and our horses. We hope to see you for 2 to 3 visits before making a final decision. Ride,  give him a bath, or just hang out and get to know each other. This is your special day and no one elses." ~ Rochelle Makoby-Vergalito, Operations Manager

Limited veterinarian status 2025:

Veterinarians are not as accessible as they used to be and only 20 graduate with a degree every year now according to current data.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are in a very rural area and most veterinarians are not accessible or willing to travel for anyone other than their clients due to high demand of their time. So please plan ahead to schedule a veterinarian  from outside our operation.
